Here in Romania, up in this IT city I work in, Cluj-Napoca, and the surrounding towns it is not uncommon to see lots of Roman ruins and the remains of baths. Lots of Remus, Octavian, Trajan, Lavinias, etc....names left from the time of the Romans are often the middle names and how people refer to each other casually instead of using the first Christian name. My roommate's dad gave her a Christian name at baptism but her middle name and the name we all use derived from Cora.

I checked in a lady when I worked at hotel in Nashville, and our managers were very strict about us saying the guest's name at least 3x during the check-in. This lady had been in the queue to check in, so when I motioned for her to come over to my station, she handed me her passport and quickly said, "Please don't say my last name. Thuwayba. I met her at McGill U Engineering, she was from Tanzania and was definitely staying in North America and was looking for ways to shorten her name to a universal diminutive. I think it might be a Swahili name. Other members of her family seem to have Arabic names for the men, and Swahili names for the women, but it's not a rigid tradition.
I loved her name, loved saying it and how it rolled of the tongue. I think she was disappointed when I told her I'm gay but over 20 years later we're still close, and honest, friends. She wanted us to call her Aba for a while but we all kind of call her Thu or Thewey, which she loves.

Parents who give their kids weird names are committing child abuse. It's been proven in studies that children with weird names tend to have more problems in school, be more prone to drug abuse, get arrested more often than children who have normal sounding names. Can you imagine a parent naming their kid Donald when their last name is "Duck" or someone named their kid Ima when their last name is "Hogg?" Those are actual names. And celebrities try to outdo themselves when it comes to bizarre names. I think anybody name their kids like that has a definite streak of hostility towards them.

True story. I worked in a vital records office that handled birth records. A birth certificate came in that listed a babies name as "Female." We checked with the family to see if there was a mistake. The immigrant Hispanic parents said, yes, that they were talking about what to name their daughter but saw that the family had named the girl "Female" (rhyming it with "tamale") and thought that's how things were done, so they kept quiet.
Little Female. They did not request a correction. What happened subsequently I don't know.

There's some lawyer named Cupcake Brown. She wrote a memoir called "A Piece of Cake" which is the "inspirational" story of how she rose from being a drug addicted teenage hooker to a lawyer in a large law firm. The veracity of the memoir has been called into question. It's probably mostly fake. In fact, Brown's story of how she got her name is one of the biggest bullshit tales that's been around forever. It's the old "Oranjello" or "Lemonjello" story all over again:
"My name was La’Vette, but my first birth name was Cupcake. At least that’s what my momma told me. Seems Momma craved cupcakes when she was pregnant with me. She had three cupcakes a day, every day, without fail, for nine and a half months (I was two weeks overdue). Momma said that even if she didn’t eat anything else, she’d have her daily dose of cupcakes.
Anyway, seems that while “we” were in labor, the hospital gave Momma some pain drugs. Once Momma popped me out, the nurse said:
“Pat”—that was my momma’s name—“you have a little girl. Do you know what you want to name her?”
Tired and exhausted from eight hours of hard labor, Momma lifted her head, smiled sheepishly, and said, “Cupcake,” before she passed out.
So that’s what they put down on my birth certificate. I mean, that is what she said. (The nurses thought it was due to the excitement of motherhood, Momma said it was the drugs)."
I guess if Cupcake Brown thought her readers would believe THAT, they would believe anything else she said.

R139, that 'Female' problem is an old one. A now elderly friend of mine is the youngest of her immigrant Irish parents' brood. In Ireland, the parents were accustomed to naming the child in church with a christening at a time no long after the birth. Producing a name to hospital staff when the birth occurred was not how they did it, so my friend's three oldest sisters all ended up with birth certificates listing their names as Female. And the younger siblings made sure they never forgot it.

We had two immigrant kids from, I think, the Philippines at my high school. They were twins, two girls.
One was called Apple, and her sister's name was Cherry. I kid you not.

I legally changed my name when I was 36 years old. My dad gave us all names so that our initials were MNO. And that caused a shit load of problems in school with grades getting crossed from one person to another. When I got older and started establishing credit lines, that also caused a major problem because my brothers’ shitty credit was constantly getting leaked into mine. So when I legally changed my name I went to the local bookstore and found a baby name book and I picked my new name from there. I made it so different from my birth name that it’s virtually impossible for all of those credit issues to happen now. That and I had a credit freeze established about 20 years ago.
