2500 bc hardly made these people "cavemen" - the pyramids at Giza were built at roughly the same time.

R4 exactly. Before money and social hierarchy no one probably gave a shit what you did. Just don't steal, rape or kill.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 13, 2018 8:25 PM |
R4 and R5 have it, people were far too worried about basic survival to care who was fucking who. Also men would leave for weeks or sometimes even months on hunting trips. Of course they fucked. Who would stop them?

There are cave paintings portraying male homosexuality, including anal sex between men.

Honestly even in a lot of built up ancient societies like Rome, Persia, and Japan, homosexuality was fine in society IF and only if you married a woman and reproduced with her. Really, it was the rise of Christianity that created the great stigma against it (along with some probably healthy stigmas like our more modern disgust with incest) and the Christian religion didn't gain real power until just 1300 or so years ago. That's just like the most recent fifth of recorded human history

r2, Egypt was highly civilized in 2500 BC, but Europeans were still very primitive at that time, so "caveman" is a somewhat appropriate term to use in this case.
Interesting that even back then, homosexuality was associated with effeminacy as the "gay caveman" was given a female burial.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 13, 2018 8:54 PM |
R16, according to John Boswell that isn't true and being gay wasn't stigmatized until the later middle ages.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 13, 2018 8:54 PM |
R18 I suppose that may be true. I know Christianity took hold in Europe around 500 to 800 AD, but I guess I don't know for a fact they specifically tried to end homosexuality at that point like we know they did with incest and polygamy
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 13, 2018 8:57 PM |
R18 Boswell's thesis and his historiography have come under considerable criticism, so it's not as if he came to a conclusion that even queer historians all agree on.

Derp. He was given a female burial probably more due to the fact that he was an effeminate man than due to the fact that he had sex with other men. In fact, we don't know for sure whom he had sex with - it's being speculated that he was gay because he was likely feminine. It's a fair assumption to make - in the pre-modern world, feminine men are homosexual. It's only in the modern West that we have straight men claiming a feminine identity (autogynephiles).
And you're mistaken that Corded Ware people were "cave men". They descend from a culture (the Yamna culture) which took Europe by storm, using domesticated horses and chariot as transportation - their own innovation. This is a level of sophistication that pre-historic cave men did not possess.

If homosexuality were as widely accepted as heterosexuality, we’d have a lot more information about homosexual marriages and relationships. Just my opinion. But I don’t think it was always vilified, probably just a thing that some people did.

| by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 13, 2018 9:20 PM |
R24 We have a LOT of information on homosexual relationships, just not marriages. Alexander the Great was openly gay, Marc Antony had a relationship with an effeminate gay actor for years, male courtesans were trained for nobility in Japan. Many, many, MANY, more.
Marriage though seems to have been a purely heterosexual endeavor until this century

What do you suppose life was like for gay cavemen?
HARD
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 13, 2018 9:26 PM |
Well at least we know there were no old "queens" because almost none of them lived past 40. That probably relieves those of you who think anyone over 40 is irrelevant.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 13, 2018 9:47 PM |
I had to blow ArrgArrg today to help him with the raping rage. LaggLagg and the tribeswomen were so grateful for my rape prevention service that they gave me a Leopard tunic. Ugh... That is so last year, Tiger skin tunic is all the rage now (male ones only please, preferably white). However, being raised properly, I just grin and bear it, then give compliments on the latest cave painting on LaggLagg's cave, even though it is soooo tacky. I'm such a good guy
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 13, 2018 9:58 PM |
There were no labels for behavior like there are today. Sort of like pre-WWII.

Marriage is important in straight relationships because they produce children so there are issues of inheritance. Gay relationships dont produce children so less need for legal relationships historically.
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 13, 2018 10:24 PM |
R26, most patriarchal cultures allow men a lot of sexual freedom, in all the cultures you mention and more it was okay for men of high status to have the sort of lovers and slaves they preferred and for men of low status to have access to the prostitutes of their preference, as long as they married and produced legitimate children. Most patriarchal cultures only force sexual "morality" onto women, and that's been true of western civilization since it, well, civilization. Tolerance for homosexuality has come and gone and come again, but periods where any serious limitation was put on straight male (or "straight" male) sexuality are just blips in history.
As for cave society before all that bullshit came along... wouldn't we like to know? I find it hard to believe that there weren't any societal guidelines to sex, because even herd or social animals have things they do and don't do. Still, it would be interesting to see the numbers, if all sexual behavior is considered the same, how many men would go for other men?

The lifespan was probably shorter than that. The brains were small. Common sense around predators would have been lower. I hardly think they got past physiological needs before some animal snacked on them.

R34 most agree but don't think the difference was as stark as you're saying. Several married women in Ancient Rome were known to have had affairs, and it doesn't seem to have overly hurt their reputations outside of gossip.
Strongest argument for gay cavemen to me is that men spent long periods away from women hunting. I think it's far more likely that they had sex with each other at least some rather than had no sex at all
