Sissy Spacek in The Mommy Market/Trading Moms

Did any of you bitches ever see The Mommy Market aka Trading Moms (1994) with Sissy Spacek? Three kids wish their mother away and try out three other different moms purchased from the mommy market. It’s all designed to make the kids realize what a treasure of a mother they really have.

Sissy Spacek plays all three iterations of mothers from the mommy market. First is a high maintenance snobby chain smoking fur wearing French caricature of a woman who only cares about appearances, second is a butch lesbian wilderness woman who will stop at nothing to be the best at everything even at the expensive of the kids, and the third version of their mother is an absolutely insane circus performance queen who must be on drugs.

Maureen Stapleton plays the hippie granola witch who gives the children the magic to find a new mother.

It’s campy as hell and really shows the acting chops of Sissy Spacek. I’m not sure any other actress could have pulled off four different roles.

Did you find this piece of cinema in the VHS bin at Walmart, or at Dollar Tree, OP?

by Anonymousreply 5May 20, 2023 2:55 AM

I want to see the hilarious belated sequel, The Daddy Market, starring Ben Barnes.

The book was very popular when I was in elementary school in the 60s. I remember liking it a lot.

I haven’t been this disturbed since I found 60 copies of Hallow Man in a Blockbuster dumpster.

I always forget she was actually a very pretty woman when she wore makeup and styled her hair.

I always think of her as plain Carrie White. I never think of her in any other role.

Her hair extensions look like shit in that poster. Having said that, man I miss the '90s.

What's Chlumsky up to these days?

R12 She was on Veep all 7 seasons, ended in 2019. I think she was nominated for an Emmy every season.

I know, I meant aside from Veep, which I'm sure we all watched her in.

When I think of Sissy Spacek, I always think of Coal Miners Daughter and In the Bedroom, Tom Wilkinson was great in that, too. I've never watched OP's movie, but ill check it out tomorrow.

Thanks Op, I watched it tonight.

I saw this years ago and I remember it feeling very “off,” like it was filmed in Eastern Europe on the cheap or something. The video quality was terrible - looked like an episode of Tales From The Darkside. I’d never heard of it before seeing it on the video store shelf. Did it actually play in theaters?

I have memories of this film similar to those of R17. I only remember bits and pieces of it, but it was a very strange movie, almost off-putting, akin to something like "The Peanut Butter Solution".

The boy who played Jeremy ended up looking somewhat like Pete Buttigieg.

R19 I see he’s not wearing the earring.

I only lasted 30 minutes, but Sissy was a revelation as the haughty glamorous mother, especially since she's so identified with mousy Midwestern types. She would have been a fantastic Cruella de Vil.

by Anonymousreply 21May 21, 2023 12:35 AM

Heh R21 one of the kids joked about her being Cruella de Vil.
