I was taking Tylenol PM or Benadryl and thought Melatonin would be healthier but now I feel sick to my stomach.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 10, 2021 10:38 PM |
Melatonin only helps me to fall asleep, not stay asleep. But I never experienced nausea. Sorry, OP.

Melatonin doesn’t work for me. But it never upset my stomach.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 9, 2021 10:22 AM |
I tried it and not only did I not sleep but I was irritable and out of sorts the following day. I’ve heard that you need to start with a low dosage
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 9, 2021 10:22 AM |
Melatonin gave me Lovecraftian level nightmares. Never again. Just something is natural doesn't mean it is necessarily safe.
Get something gentle in your stomach OP, like some plain toast and a hard boiled egg with a bit of salt if you can handle it. Also, if you have any, drink some tomato juice. also, a bit of sugar in the form of a banana would also be good. NO coffee or tea with caffeine. You will feel better but it might take a while.
Put that shit in your "no" pile from here on out.
I swear I hear more horror stories than positive ones with this stuff.
Gentle back rub. Deep breaths.

Anytime, OP! I only tried melatonin a few times and it wasn't really helpful, so I no longer take it. R5 has made some great suggestions. I've tried a banana, which helps me. I will also listen to a book on tape or a podcast (NOT true crime!) and it feels like someone is reading you a bedtime story. You can also listen to a guided meditation/mindfulness audio; YouTube has a lot.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 9, 2021 10:47 AM |
Thanks r5 and at least I didn't have nightmares, yikes
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 9, 2021 10:47 AM |
It works well for me but the nausea is something new I’ve never experienced. Try raising your head with a second pillow? I find sleeping a little more ‘upright’ helps when I feel queasy.

I tried a Melatonin gummy once., fell asleep 15 minutes later, woke up 30 minutes after et didn't get any sleep for the rest of the night.
It's really not for everyone.

Try CBD; works like a charm & none of that hang over feeling of other meds. You'll have weird, trippy dreams, but nothing horrifying.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 9, 2021 11:08 AM |
^ Can you recommend a particular brand? I've tried some CBD oils and they just don't work for me.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 9, 2021 11:11 AM |
I developed a problem whereby I couldn't sleep the night following a melatonin night.
As far as nausea - well, OP, was it the melatonin or a gut filled at the glory hole?
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 9, 2021 11:14 AM |
I take Garden of Life brand CBD+ Sleep available at Vitamin Shoppe in the US. Works great.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 9, 2021 11:19 AM |
Thanks R14! Will give it a try.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 9, 2021 11:26 AM |
i think you should try a low dose (2 or 5mcg) and make sure you don't have media going on in the background/no alcohol. That's my experience. Once I wake up, that's it. Not going back to sleep for several hours. Happily, my work from home schedule allows for me to start at 10:30ish my time. These days I'm happy if I get 5 hours non-consecutively.

Charlotte's Web CBD. I personally prefer the gummies, though the oils work well too. It's on the expensive side, but worth it

OP, run, don't walk to CBDZAR. I have severe chronic pain, plus peptic ulcer and chronic insomnia. With my weird brain chemistry, Oxycontin/condone may as well be a Haribo gummy. I tried at least a dozen CBD (FabCBD, Tommy Chong's, Green Roads, etc.). Nothing.
On one of my Texas sister's visits, she brought me a package of CBDZAR products, and said she'd talked at length with the founder/owners, both veterans with various combat-related issues.
Tbh, their standard CBD tincture didn't work for me, but it knocked my Dad right out. But their [bold]Delta 8[/bold] line, omg. Unkinked my neck and back, calmed my restless legs, soothed my stomach spasms and nausea. My sister in post-Crossfit session hunger, ate one of their delicious peanut butter cups. Fifteen minutes later she said it was like cleaning the swimming pool while doing tai'chi.
Their Delta 8 line contains THC, but their other lines are straight CBD w/o THC. Everything is of high quality, and their staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.
Run, OP, RUUUUUUUNNNNN!

I've used CBD gummies both with and without melatonin and they give me massive hangovers. I have a bad ankle that can't be fixed surgically and sometimes it's so painful I have to take ibuprofen, use hot & cold therapy, AND I use some CBD gummies. Half the time, I get a little loopy from it. It's more like 3/4ths of the time when I have CBD plus melatonin.
I use Charlotte's Web brand. No idea how the oil works, I've only had gummies.
Personally I love melatonin, I get the flavored gummies (Target's Up & Up brand) and have 5 mg plus a half dose of Unisom Sleeptabs. I've also used the kind of melatonin that dissolves under the tongue. Don't care for the melatonin plus l-theanine, it can upset my stomach a bit.
Try a small glass of almond milk before bed and before taking whatever sleep pill you use, and see if that helps.

i have spent the past 3+ nights not drinking after a serious drinking habit. I started with melatonin and had the same exact thing happen to me - once i woke, that was it.
then i tried Trazadone with no drinking and both of them gave me the same thing - horrific nightmares of all kinds. Never happened before this but i think it's because drinking every night, i really didn't get any REM sleep. You can't go for very long without REM sleep without severe effects.
i NEVER recommend Benadryl. long term use puts you at serious risk for dementia. I used that for a year or so before i had both a therapist and doc tell me to stop that for nightly put-downs.

[quote] Our Charlotte’s Web™ CBD Gummies are formulated with our full-spectrum hemp extract and contain 10 mg of CBD and[bold] 3 mg of melatonin[/bold] in every serving to help you float off to dreamland.*
You all realize that the CBD "sleep" gummies work because they add melatonin, right?

OP is beginning stage 2 of chronic heart failure. See your heart doctor STAT. Moreover, taking too much benadryl or most first gen antihistamines will cause prenature dementia, OP.

Be careful when purchasing CBD products (which is why it’s great that everyone is sharing recommendations).
I remember reading that Dr Oz’s show (ugh) tested a bunch of CBD products and the vast majority had no CBD or a sub-therapeutic level. So when you hear these Real Housewives and others peddling their CBD products, be very leary.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 9, 2021 12:31 PM |
Ugh, R25, Trazodone. I had your same experience, plus it literally plugged both my sinuses so I. Couldn't. Breathe. through my nose. But because you're sedated you don't REALIZE you can't breathe, and it's a nightmarish feeling of trying to wake while being smothered. I was gasping and clawing at my throat to get air.
I slept the rest of the night upright in an armchair, breathing through my mouth. Tried it again 25 years later--same thing. On only 25 tiny milligrams--one quarter of one tablet. Apparently I am that "In clinical trials, fewer than <1/000000032 of 1% had significant ...." loser noted in the accompanying pamphlet.
Awful, awful stuff.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 9, 2021 12:32 PM |
Yes, 29. I don't agree it works, but i works better than few of the other things. I am moving soon and I think the down the road 420 needs a visit for just plain CAN I GET TO SLEEP meds.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 9, 2021 12:36 PM |
R28, it looks like Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil were only testing CBD products that were falsely using their names for endorsements they didn't really give. I think those are a lot of more likely to be scams.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 9, 2021 12:39 PM |
I take Trazodone and I always have vivid dreams and they’re by and large generally good dreams. And I usually wake up with an erection too.
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 9, 2021 12:41 PM |
Melatonin can ruin your sleep cycle and should only be used periodically for travel/jet lag etc.
Magnesium and valerian are very good alternatives. I also take a small hit of my marijuana pen(legal here) and sleep very well.
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 9, 2021 12:50 PM |
Sorry, R30, I'm sorry to have implied I knew your situation. Commiserating with your Trazodone experience.
I was about to suggest Hydroxyzine for insomnia + anxiety, then saw posts above re: 1st gen antihistamines. So use your own (or doctor's) best judgment. I can't take Benadryl because it turns my entire body into one big restless leg syndrome. But I have chronic idiopathic itch, so docs had to find something. Hydroxyzine has worked well for me, and it doesn't give you a hangover like Benadryl.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 9, 2021 12:56 PM |
You want CBN not CBD. CBN is what helps with sleep.

I switched from Benadryl to Melatonin and couldn't be happier with it. One 10mg tablet dissolved on my tongue and I'm in lala land in 30 minutes.
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 10, 2021 2:44 AM |
I have you tried valerian root? It works better than melatonin for me. It keeps me asleep, but doesn’t leave me groggy in the morning.

r39 that sounds like something from Rosemary's Baby

| by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 10, 2021 4:12 AM |
Not all brands of melatonin are created equal. Try Trader Joe's brand, and start with 1 mg. If you wake up in the night, take another one, as long as it's before 4 AM.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 10, 2021 5:02 AM |
Melatonin can contribute to restless leg syndrome. I never believed that was real until I started feeling horrible, crawling, electrical sensations in my legs when trying to get to sleep. When I stopped taking Melatonin it went away.
Benadryl can do it too - they attach to the same receptors in the brain.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 10, 2021 5:02 AM |
PLEASE don't use benadryl as a sleep aid. it is a first gen antihistamine and it's now known to be a reason for dementia. I'm not going to link to any studies but they are out there. Just stop if you are using benadryl for sleep. I've had more than one health professional caution me about this.
