Haunted baking supplies aisle of ShopRite Poughkeepsie

Last night I stopped at the new ShopRite on the grounds of the demolished old Hudson River State Insane Asylum which was itself built on the an old Wappinger Indian settlement and burial ground. In fact there may have been a massacre there. I'm making Cowboy and Indian cupcakes for my nephew's birthday party - he's been watching old movies and I'm the only eldergay in the family willing to make something so genocidal and blasphemous. I choose Betty Crocker Super Moist Carrot Cake mix for the Indian cupcakes with yellow, red and chocolate frosting and when grabbed the cake mix box, a very dark and evil vibration descended on me like a lead anvil, the aisle got really cold, a chill went down my spine and there was a foul odor of decay. I looked at the box in my hand and instead of 2 walnuts on the box there were two glowing red eyes and I thought I heard screams. I shook myself and it was gone so I grabbed the cake mixes and frosting cans and got the fuck out of there. Should I make the cupcakes?

Poughkeepsie is a place of great and ancient evil.

9/10. Make the cupcakes and tell us about any resultant possessions, poltergeists, cold spots, or overbearing feelings of dread. If the recipe calls for any water, you could try using holy water.

P.S. What are you using for the cowboy cupcakes? Anything to report there?

by Anonymousreply 2August 1, 2022 2:44 AM

White cake, blue frosting, edible silver stars and red licorice string "rope".

You may need to call in a professional for this.

Make the cupcakes, but to break the spell you may need to shove them up your ass before serving. Take extra special care if sprinkles are involved.

R3, I meant is that mix haunted, too?

by Anonymousreply 6August 1, 2022 3:11 AM

I don't think the boys and girls will like ass-scented Cowboy and Indian genocidal cupcakes.

by Anonymousreply 7August 1, 2022 3:12 AM

I have reservations about the red licorice "lassos" because they look like demonic nooses.

I this why Kevin Sessums broke up with you?

I never get invited to any of the fun parties. A haunted cupcake sounds wonderful!

by Anonymousreply 10August 1, 2022 3:34 AM

R10 I know! I want to put little graves on my cupcakes.

Speaking of Poughkeepsie, I hope you got to see Loretta Swit’s one woman show when she came through town.

Truthfully, I was a little disappointed at first, because all she did was tell stories about Alan Alda. Boring!

But it was genius to have her sit on an oversized commode while telling them. Then what made the night was the tank lid exploding straight up in the air, releasing balloons and confetti. Then there was a loud flushing noise and Swit started spinning around and around until she disappeared into the toilet bowl.

Did Miss Swit pick her toes in Poughkeepsie?

You’ve done well, OP.

10/10

Points for the Youtube link.

Obvious EST. No eldergay worth his salt would use boxed cake mix!

The Acme by my house in South Philly is built on the same spot as the Moyamensing Prison, where Poe spent a night in jail for public drunkenness and H.H. Holmes was executed. Part of the original wall still borders the square.

Cake mix and canned frosting...

by Anonymousreply 21April 16, 2023 9:11 AM

Cowboys and Indians?! Cancelled!

by Anonymousreply 22April 16, 2023 9:29 AM

R20, do you mean this wall?

R23 yah that’s it, but why is it on a Dallas site?

When H.H.Holmes was hanged, he didn’t die right away or a broken neck like he should have. He dangled, suffering for 15 minutes. Good, hope it was miserable, asshole.

I’ve actually asked Acme employees if the store is haunted, but most don’t even realize the history of the land.

From the what I’ve read, Moyamensing was worse than Eastern State, and unlike Eastern State, they did execute there.

OMG, I felt the same way the other day at the Danvers, MA CVS!

But then I picked up a box of Dolly Parton cake mix frosting and all the darkness went away.

What kid wants carrot cake?

We have haunted Lake Lanier and Civil War ghosts. I briefly worked for a doctor and he worked from his very old, stately Georgia home. There was a young civil war spirit in the basement where old patient charts were stored. I dreaded having to walk down those stairs to the basement. Something would touch my long hair and lift a strand into the air. One day I stood at the top of the stairs, scared to death to go down. I suddenly said out loud " Now Jon , I have to come down there for a chart and I am respectfully asking you to please not frighten me this time. " Nothing. He never touched my hair again. I thanked him and got the hell out of there. It seems our Jon was a southern gentleman.

As well there should be.

r20/r23/r24 That photo is part of the rear wall of the prison which existed for about a century. The site does indeed have an Acme Markets on it, I toiled there for a dozen years before merrily skipping off into retirement. Going by there was my route home from elementary school( a block away), my schoolmates and I would run by the place because we could see prisoners through the windows and thought they'd rush out to grab us.

The building itself was beautiful(one mad queen I knew called it "Abyssinian Deco") as you can tell from the drawing of the facade. When my mom was in a nursing one of her fellow residents was the secretary to the last warden at Moyamensing Prison. She would've been a great person to interview and possibly hear some interesting tales, unfortunately she was in the grip of deep Alzheimer's, she didn't even know where she was.

OP: I hope you'll be including some Smith Brothers Cough Drops as part of the cupcakes decorations, they were first sold in Poughkeepsie. And go heavy on the Indian theme, since Poughkeepsie comes from the language of the local tribe.

R24, I’ve been to that Acme a million times. I totally forgot that that was the site of the prison. I knew about it but hadn’t thought about it in years. I knew a few guys who used to get sucked off behind it. lol
