He probably had Hillary in his ear all the time about how he could help kids. That was her big issue for decades before they got to the White House. And there was a recession going on when he was elected and his big issue was putting people back to work. He had a lot of baggage due to his father's premature death and his alcoholic stepfather beating his mother. Psychologists said at the time that Clinton had an emotional need to be liked and be a peacemaker due to his upbringing with his alcoholic stepfather. It's something that happens with children of alcoholics.
So I'm guessing Clinton told Monica what she wanted to hear. That's really common with married men who cheat on their wives. But she didn't have to be there and listen.

Feel the same way now as I did then: He was a complete dumbass for fooling around with her. And then lying about it, which resulted in a lot of his friends and colleagues racking up huge legal bills defending him.

R286: Sorry, I can't find the FBI/Lewinsky article I described in R285. There's a terrific documentary called "The Clinton Affair" from A&E that interviews Lewinsky and the FBI agents, and all the other players in the drama. Highly recommended for all DLers.
In a nutshell: Linda Tripp worked with FBI to grab Monica. Monica flipped out and made the FBI agents lives hell for several hours. Refusing to snitch, crying, pouting, making the FBI agents take her to a Mall to window shop and eat at a food court until her mom arrived. It's a great story!
Starr and the FBI really did a number on her and she fought back with the only power she had in the moment: tears and temper tantrums. The FBI agents didn't know how to deal with it!
I truly consider herself something of a nutty hero. I love that she fought back after she was maligned by the GOP and the Clinton machine. (I like the Clinton's, but they take no prisoners when cornered.)

The podcast is truly outstanding, and made me question my (and other liberal women's) easy dismissal of women's accusations against Clinton. The podcast interviews Juanita Broderick, who accused Clinton of raping her. I always considered her--and other accusers of his sexual aggressiveness--nothing but a GOP shill. But this podcast made me rethink my unquestioning defense of Clinton. I certainly haven't sided with Trump over his female accusers. (Rightly so! He's a scumbag and I believe the allegations that he's a rapist.). But I have always given Clinton a pass because he's one of us.
As I said above, I don't agree that Clinton was a predator with Lewinsky. She got herself into that pickle, and was old enough to claim responsibility (which she has) for her own stupid mistakes. And of course she was traumatized after being used as a weapon by the FBI/GOP against Clinton--and then to have the Clinton machine roll over her and provide her no cover.
