This time, it's for saying the word "gypped" on The View. It's an ethnic slur in regards to the Romani people. Here's her explanation and apology:

I feel like Gypsies aren't even a thing in the US. When I thought of Gypsies as a kid I thought crystal balls, mystics, that sort of thing. It was only when I had a European partner that I was given then negative connotations. As a child in the 80's, I suppose children no longer sit "Indian style" around the circle.

The Irish traveller community in the UK refer to themselves as Gypsies for some unknown reason?
In reality they are grifters who want to live for free and not pay taxes. Most of them are reasonably wealthy, it's a lifestyle choice.

According to my Ancestry DNA results I am 50% Greek, 48% Italian and 2% Armenian so I can call out a filthy gypsy as I please.
I'm not offended by what Whoopi said. I will never forget when I was working in retail during high school and those filthy gypsies would come in with their long skirts, shove as much clothing up their skirts and leave pregnant.

Gypped was commonly used in the 90s as was Indian-giver. I still hear old people say "Oriental" or "Moslem." Twitter and the news media isn't real life. Most people could care less.

Gypsies sure get easily offended when they have no respect or regard for anything or anybody themselves. I live in Europe and the "husbands" treat their multiple underage "wives" like baby machines while the kids grown up in dirty and ignorant conditions and when they are old enough (11/12 or even less) they have to commit crimes after crimes to provide for the family instead of attending school ( yep the householders never work they just drink alcohol all day).Respecting these people means shitting on civilization.

R23 No, that is not totally correct. Gypsy has been used as a catch all for many roaming populations, including Roma. And, some Roma did blend into Traveller society. But, Travellers refer to themselves as Travellers.
And while there is a lifestyle and culture associated with being a Travellers, it is not fair to imply they are not a distinct people. They are recognized as a minority group, they have their own language (although dying) they have a distinct pheological look due to a lot of intermarriage, and DNA test done try Trinity College as recent as 2017 show a unique Traveller DNA profile and Travellers and other Irish probably split some time in the 1600, and well before the famine for sure.

I remember reading the word "gypped" in a book many years ago and I honestly thought it was spelled wrong, or they were making a pun I didn't understand, until I looked it up. I'd thought the word was "jipped" until then and was just some old slang.
