New York Characters you haven't thought about for years.

I'll start.

Annie Sprinkle. And she's alive, at 68. (Real age?) I never got much into her "act" or identity but she was very pleasant. This documentary on High School Sluts looks promising.

Oh I posted the wrong doc. No biggie. I guess she is just an interviewee in it, along with Dan Savage and others.

I've thought about starting an Annie Sprinkle thread but I figured everyone had forgotten about her at this point.

The guy who used to walk a chicken on a leash outside the courthouse.

Ugly George. Used to see him sometimes walking around in his weird jumpsuit, camera at the ready.

Sometimes I really miss public-access cable.

Feel free to chat about Annie and also nominate another person for the category.

Nelson Sullivan

He lugged around his VHS camcorder and recorded life in NYC in the mid to late 80s.

Nelson passed away on July 4th, 1989 from an undiagnosed heart condition.

This was his last video taken on July 3rd. At the end of the video, his pals Lady Bunny and RuPaul are cooking hamburgers on the grill.

Well Nelson has turned into a quite well known chronicler and his videos come up all the time. I certainly hear his name or see something every year.

Annie is a sweetheart. She's not really forgotten though. She's just not as high profile. She has really reinvented herself so many times. Most recently, she became a performance artist. She and her partner Beth are a type of environmentalists called 'ecosexuals'.

A lot of the NY porn queens that were around in the 70s and early 80s were cool people and gay friendly long before it was fashionable. Annie, Robin Byrd, Georgina Spelvin, Andrea True, Jeanne Silver, Veronica Hart, Marlene Willoughby, Samantha Fox, Sue Nero, ect.

Pity the Rev Al Sharpton isn't nearly forgotten.

Annie Sprinkle was just another crazy chick caught up in that whole countercultural sexual revolution BS. Back in the 90s, I was in some gay bookstore, thumbing through some books when I came upon some autobiography/memoirs she had written. From what I remember, she talks in one section of the book about being a hooker and having a regular client, who was married with kids. One day she bumped into that client’s kid somewhere in New York and wanted to engage him in some pleasant conversation, like she was just a friend of the family. The kid understandably wanted nothing to do with his dad’s whore, but Annie just couldn’t really understand why. Yeah, she was crazy alright.

I miss New Yorker Joan Rivers. She was so vibrant and healthy-looking, I thought she would easily live to be 100. I wish I could go back and tell her to skip that doctor’s appointment. How tragic!

Joey Arias.

I loved her drag queen band "Justine and the Pussycats". I stumbled on her performing at one of the earliest Wigstocks (1988). She performed, and introduced the band, and ended talking about herself, saying "and I'm Justine Muther Fucker!"

Joey did a live stream during deep covid early 2020. Online ran into a bunch of old friends from the scene.

Elliott Offen. Every once in a while I see that crazy asshole jogging in the bus lane down Second Avenue.

Also, Adam Purple in the East Village.

Speaking of…there used to be a woman who lived down there when I did, who would cover every inch of her skin. She’d wrap scarves over her head and face, with a little bit for her eyes left open so she could see through her sunglasses. She had a very strange stiff gait. My friend’s mom said she knew her when she was just a normal person but then she went off the deep end and started wearing the scarves and being afraid of her skin being exposed.

R25, I recall a piss lady that had an add that said "Dial 1-900-970-PEEE. The extra E is for extra PEE!"
