"A listener-supported radio station in North Carolina, WCPE, is planning to withhold the broadcast of six contemporary operas this season from New York's Metropolitan Opera, because of the station management's objections to the operas' content. It is a classical music controversy that echoes larger, nationwide culture war debates."
"WCPE is a listener-supported public radio station that primarily serves the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill areas. (WCPE is an NPR member station, but does not broadcast any NPR news content. Per the station, WCPE has not carried any NPR news content in about a decade.)"
"In the NPR interview, (general manager Deborah) Proctor called WCPE's programming "a safe refuge from the horrors of life." Repeatedly, Proctor also appealed to the sensibilities of any children who might tune into her station or come across it online and said that her personal values were integral to her decision-making. Breaking into tears on the phone, Proctor said: "I have a moral decision to make here. What if one child hears this? When I stand before Jesus Christ on Judgement Day, what am I going to say?"
One example from the story, this bitch objects to THE HOURS because it includes a scene of suicide. But she's fine with broadcasts of MADAMA BUTTERFLY (which concludes with a suicide) and ROMEO ET JULIETTE (which has a double-suicide), no doubt because they're in a foreign language and that "one child" won't understand what is being said.

NPR and opera, two topics educated white upper class people love to talk about.

Too bad they don’t have other NPR programming, because then the audience could listen to discussions of Schweddy balls.

This bitch needs to be fired. NPR is not a refuge from 'the horrors of life' - where the fuck did she come up with that. It's also not a children's network.
She needs to go work at Hobby Lobby and let the real adults take over. Resign lady -you're not up to the job for programming.
Like soooo many kids are staying up to watch MET Opera. Please. She's a homophobic Christian piece of shit.

The Christofascists are now openly exercising their control of broadcast outlets.

Sad. Furthermore it’s hella disrespectful. The only people watching NPR in North Carolina are the uber educated liberals in around Durham, Duke and the other University towns.

She talks about having support from her listeners but I wonder how many of them will stop contributing to the station now that this is getting media coverage.
The station serves areas east and north of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, and those tend to be more fundie conservative, but I would hope that her more liberal contributors will take their donations elsewhere.
The fact that NPR's site is running this story makes me wonder if they want to be rid of the station since it doesn't run any of their news programming. I know that NPR stations pay a fee for programming but are there any perks to being a member station that this fundie bitch wouldn't want to lose?

If you read the article, there is no consistency in how she's approaching her decisions - which means it's all BULLSHIT.
And she's covering up her move by saying that she sent out a survey to NPR subscribers and 90% have been supportive of her decision. Really? Show us the survey and the data.
Her own statement about standing before God on Judgment Day is all we need to know. Your religion has NO PLACE in deciding what goes on over public stations. Separation of church and state bitch.
Watch - she's going to be rightfully roasted and will say how she's being persecuted for being a Christian. It's the same game book we see time and time again.
All of this book banning and content banning by the right is really fucking scary. I hope every liberal who donates to that station pulls their support.

They don’t play anything other than classical music, 24/7 and has a TINY listener base. I didn’t know that classical music programming was sent out by NPR as the real NPR station in this area, WUNC, doesn’t play any classical music at all.
The woman who manages the station has done so for around fifty years, since the establishment of the station, so she must be absolutely ancient.

Where is free speech absolutist Elon Musk and all the free speech warriors on the right? Will they be commenting?

Couldn't the fascists just edit out or lower the volume and put a big pink triangle over the really faggoty stuff?
After all, someone has to think of the innocent hetero christian children!
