WHY.... can't we ever see a report of a well-known or successful gay couple who aren't "affluently clean-cut" and are poster boys for what everyone, especially the media, thinks gay men are/should look like?
Will we ever see in the news, or commercials or television a "real" gay couple? Maybe one who isn't feminine, or who isn't lean and trim, and who doesn't wear slim-fit Marmot jackets? Maybe a slightly bearish couple, (no, not stereotypical bears), a couple who don't photograph as immediately attractive or beautiful, a couple where at least one of them looks like a plumber or works on cars for a living, or who farms? And no, not the stereotype "hot cop" or "hot farmer". Just, two, REAL guys. Especially a couple who is over 40 or even over 45.
We've seen variations of all of this, but always adjacent to a stereotype. Look at the couple on that Modern Family television show. Neither guy was a spring chicken. Neither was "beautiful" or "sexy". One was even a big bear. But, of course, they had to be affluent, living in a very well-off neighborhood in a nice big beautiful home that adopted the stereotypical Asian girl. One was "practical" but, of course, had a big-time job. The other was prone to nelly outbursts and was a flouncing stereotype. And yet, they were supposed to be the "modern" version of a gay couple.
Why is society barred from seeing those representations of us?
