His screen time in Honey Boy as young adult Shia LeBeouf (circa Transformers) is short relative to Noah Jupe's (as adolescent child star LeBeouf), but his notices have been good. His next movie, Waves directed by Trey Edward Shults, probably won't be released until autumn, but I agree that this young man is playing the long game. He doesn't attract the fever-level attention of his year-older supernova Lady Bird co-star, but he's making interesting choices and gradually building a following and identity of his own. The rap against him is that he owes his budding career to his director/screenwriter father. There's no denying his advantages there, but he's also generally acknowledged to be a talented and promising performer. I like him a lot, he's attractive, talented and I hope he gets a role that takes him to the next level.

I think Lucas is the real deal. He did mention in a profile that he'd like to do a comedy after a series of troubled-young-man roles. Actually, it seems from reviews of the novel French Exit that this will be another one of those; but perhaps the context this time will be more comedic rather than tragic. He and his management are steadily building an impressive body of work, especially for someone so young. Perhaps another nomination is in his future? Besides, he gets to add another famous screen mom to his resume: Pfeiffer makes his fourth.

French Exist has begun shooting

Hmmm. Just finished this quick read of a novel. It begins as an arch, laconic, deadpan sketch of two people I did not like, but gradually acquires in its final chapters an unexpected poignancy and gravitas. And, I started to care about Frances and her annoyingly obtuse son Malcolm. Not great, but OK. I'm curious to see what sort of film could be made of French Exit and how director Azazel Jacobs will handle the supernatural elements. Judging from the book and the photo (author Patrick deWitt on the right), Lucas will be in full adorkable mode. I think he can pull it off.

He was really good in Ben Is Back. Kinda meh in Boy Erased though.
