John Goodman Is A Homosexualist in 'Normal, Ohio'.

Good, it finally surfaced.

The show stars John Goodman as William "Butch" Gamble, a gay man returning to his Midwestern home town. The cast also includes Joely Fisher, Anita Gillette, Orson Bean, Mo Gaffney and Charles Rocket. The title is a reference to Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio.

Was he testing the waters with this one? He didn't exactly play straight in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Or, The Big Lebowski, now that I think of it. But I sure did love him as a bear. He's deflated now.

Leak the "Mama Dallas" pilot, Augie.

"Two Pink Men," huh? Is Rocco family?

This was one in a loooong line of late 90s/early 2000s Fox shows that were troubled before they ever hit the air (and most of which never actually did, despite being announced at upfronts.) The original title was "Don't Ask" and starred Goodman and Anthony LaPaglia as two friends—one gay, one straight—who become roommates in WeHo. It was entirely retooled and reshot before it premiered with Goodman playing a gay guy being pretty much the only holdover element. Joely Fischer was added to the cast of the new version as well. She was on the WB's Grosse Pointe that year, but left to do this show instead. I assume she regretted that one since while Grosse Pointe ran for only 17 episodes, Normal, Ohio was canceled after 7.

"Grosse Pointe" was fun. It deserved to find an audience.

Funny I was just thinking of Grosse Pointe last night. It was such a funny show but I actually think it’s probably best it ended after one season. Not sure it would have sustained much longer than it did before becoming the exact type of show it was parodying. (See: Ryan Murphy’s Popular)

"Popular" was such a mess towards the end.

by Anonymousreply 8July 17, 2020 8:51 PM

I guess I am the only one who liked this series? Everyone on it was funny, some of the plot lines were very OTT, and I'm sorry there weren't more episodes. John Goodman can really play one hilarioua/bitchy queen. Family dysfunction at its humorous best.

What did he do to prepare? Follow himself around for a year?

by Anonymousreply 10July 17, 2020 9:01 PM

Is he gay gay, or DL gay?

Yes, but it had its moments.

Delta calling Wentworth Miller "Alice" is a classic.

The Wentworth Miller guest spot was great. But the latina getting pregnant by the jock and they both left school pretty much came out of nowhere and it wasn't handled well at all. It had little to no comedy value.

It didn't "finally surface". It's been on Hulu before. I watched it a few summers ago.

Such an acting challenge for a known heterosexualist

No one wants to watch an old, morbidly obese gay man.

Hits too close to home?

R17 Yes, when the neighborhood kids yell ‘hey Koolaid’ I come crashing through the wall.

by Anonymousreply 18July 17, 2020 10:09 PM

It seemed ok, but too many characters. Goodman & the sister were good.

by Anonymousreply 20July 17, 2020 10:19 PM

With well known future Prop 8 supporter Orson Bean playing his father.

I was a fan of Grosse Pointe too. It was pretty funny.

I like John Goodman as an actor but this looks like by the numbers crapola.

That Al guy in the gladiator "costume" posing for an art class...

Young John Goodman has BDF.

I couldn't even sit through an episode.

Was the Jason Bateman show on CBS that aired after Bette Midler's show any worse?

by Anonymousreply 27July 19, 2020 6:13 PM

He was super cute when he was young.

Just the right ratio of jock to dork.

by Anonymousreply 28July 19, 2020 6:16 PM

r27 Was that the one with Alec Mapa? Probably the same level. I liked it though, Mapa was great.

by Anonymousreply 29July 19, 2020 6:17 PM

I always imagined that Goodman would look like Kevin Kilner if he hadn't gained (and lost and gained and lost) so much weight.
