The episode that got everybody's attention and made the show popular was when Mary's boyfriend came back from Africa with a mystery ailment and the whole family was quarantined as a result. Sadly, none of them died as a result of the mystery illness.

I loved the scene where the hot young male doctor made a house-call, entered David's bedroom and then quickly told the concerned parents, "He requires a long and very private treatment" before shutting and locking the door.

That family had some serious medical calamities- the mother dies the first season, Tommy almost dies (but unfortunately recovers!) and Dad Bradford marries Betty Buckley!

Everyone on this show was so LOW ENERGY! Not even the laugh track can make it funny or pleasant to watch; it's like it takes place in another dimension and no one interacts with each other like normal humans do. No wonder not ONE of the 8 kids had a career after the show ended! Brady Bunch for the win.

I've been watching my DVDs of "Eight Is Enough" over the last month, since all of this surreal Covid craziness started. They've brought me a lot of comfort in the never-dreamed-of situation we're currently living through. Just tonight I realized why I loved the show so much--I longed for an Abby in my life as a 7- to 11-year-old, about to come to terms with his sexuality (and then get walloped by the advent of AIDS). I longed for a Tom, too, and a whole family who would love and support me no matter what. Flame away, DL gays, but "Eight Is Enough"--mostly because of Betty Buckley's amazing performance--somehow saw me through one of the hardest times of my life as a kid, and it's seeing me through once again.
