According to our 25 Oscar experts from major media outlets, the tightest race at this year’s Academy Awards is Best Supporting Actress where two TV favorites are vying for their first nominations. Laurie Metcalf, who won Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the Emmys three years running for “Roseanne” beginning in 1992, is in first for her scene-stealing turn as a hardworking nurse at odds with her headstrong daughter (Saoirse Ronan) in “Lady Bird.” This recent Tony Awards champ now has the backing of 13 experts, which translates into leading odds of 5/2.

Seven-time Emmy champ Allison Janney (two of those wins were for her current featured role on the comedy “Mom”) is a strong contender for a showy part in “I, Tonya” as the foul-mouthed, chain-smoking mother of disgraced Olympic hopeful Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie). She has the votes of nine experts, which equals odds of 10/3.

So will it be?

Janney's performance is bigger and brassier, while Metcalf does a lot of subtle work. I love both performances, and personally would prefer Janney (who gets a meaty role and goes turbo on it), but I won't mind Metcalf winning.

All Academy members vote for the acting awards. Meaning the behind the scenes crew, not just actors. So this will come down to who is more liked in the industry, Janney or Metcalf.

Whoever that is, will win.

This is Metcalf’s year. A Tony Award in June, an Oscar in February and a sure Emmy for the Roseanne reboot. No other actress save for Liza has done that. She is unstoppable and beloved by her fellow actors.

R10 it was actually good. The screen pops whenever Metcalf is on screen and Ronan does a flawless American accent. Metcalf I think will win . Momentum seems to be building for her with NBR and LA film critics awards.

Sick of Janney winning everything, though I confess I never watched Mom or The West Wing. I'm pretty much familiar with her only because of her awards show presence. But I hate when people tie up categories for years on end and no one else gets a chance (Candace Bergen, Jeffrey Tambor, Julia Louis Drefus, you get the picture). Having said that, though, I always loved and adored Laurie, so I'm rooting for her big time.

I love Janney, but she's been over rewarded for her work on the West Wing. Mom is fucking awful. Janney should be embarrassed to be a part of that. Playing white trash is not really a stretch for her - she's done multiple variations of it over the years.

LM winning will be a great thing, as would AJ winning. But as others have said, Janney has like 35 Emmys and doesn't need the honor, while Metcalfe has been doing great work for decades without much recognition

R11, are you kidding? Renee Zellweger was the undeniable front runner for “Cold Mountain” the entire season. She was never going to win the top critics’ prizes, but was always a lock for the Oscar.

And the Perez/Ryder race wasn’t one where votes canceled each other out (and that phrase is a mostly meaningless one). The two front runners were in weaker movies than Paquin, so she prevailed in what was likely a very close race. It’s not like Ryder and Perez appealed to a similar demographic.

Don't count out Tiffany Haddish in Girls Trip as well. She was the surprise NY film critics awards winner who sparked a lot of controversy when she was snubbed for a Golden Globe.

Has Janney even won any critics awards so far? To be honest, I can't imagine the Academy giving out an Oscar to a movie about Tonya Hardin.

Paquin won because Holly Hunter won and they were a team. "The Piano" was a crossover art house hit and was nominated for 8 Oscars and won 3.

R28, What vote did they split? What blocs of Oscar voters did Perez and Ryder share? That’s why the term is usually meaningless. If they were in the same film, or both gave similar style of performances you’d have a case, but there is almost nothing similar about Rosie Perez and Winona Ryder, the films they did or the type of performances they gave.

There is almost nothing in common between Rosie Perez in “Fearless” and Winona Ryder in “The Age of Innocence” other than they both got nominated in the same category.

Those are critics awards. Critics don't vote for The Oscars. It wasn't like today that by the time the Oscars come around we already know the winners.

It’s good, but very depressing. You don’t get the feeling that lady bird will do anything exceptional with her life despite breaking out to New Yawk City! Or that her dad will get another shot at employment and be anything, but bankrupt.

It really captures the oppressiveness of relative poverty - though J don’t see how a two income household with one nurse and one senior programmer is that poor in Sacramento.

Agree about the Hollywood ties and influence argument. Janney is LA-based and has been for years, does both film and TV. Metcalf is mainly known for her television work, although the recent Tony may help in her favor.

The split vote phenom is a real one and could apply here. If so look for Mary J to slip in, if Ampas voters want to reward Mudbound in some fashion.

I don't understand the "LA-based"/Hollywood vs outlier argument a few posts back. Janney is primarily known for the tv show Mom these days. She's B- list. It's not like she's Annette Bening and everyone is dying to give her an Oscar. Lady Bird >>>> iTonya and AMPAS will want to reward it somewhere. It's probably not going to win Picture, Director or Best Actress. It has fierce competition in Original Screenplay. Best Supporting Actress is the perfect place to reward the film. Metcalf will win the Patricia Arquette Oscar but she'll actually deserve it. Her face in her last scene will win it for her.

Metcalf because Lady Bird is one of the "films of the year" and in addition to her deserving it, the Oscar will be a way to award the film overall. I, TOnya, doesn't have that going for it.

The real question is if Gerwig will get a direction nomination in the year when the spotlight has been shown on ill-treatment of women in Hollywood. I feel if they fail to nominate her there will be a backlash.

I haven't seen "Ladybird" yet, but I did see "I, Tonya," and Janney was incredible in the role. In fact, the entire cast was phenomenal. "I, Tonya" is probably my favorite film of 2017.

I do love Laurie Metcalf, though - a seriously underrated actress who consistently turns in great performances. I'd be happy to see her win, too.

I, Tonya was total trash. It was an overlong SNL sketch or a slightly better-than-average Lifetime movie. I felt literally nothing when it was over. There was no character development whatsoever, especially with the mother character (Janney). She wore the same expression on her face the entire movie. Yelling, glowering and cursing isn't actually a display of acting technique. If anyone actually gets nominated for awards for this they should thank their lucky stars for the hype machine, not clear space on the mantle for trophies.

In Lady Bird, Metcalf is also playing the tough, overbearing mother role. But her character actually changes and is far, far better written than anything in I, Tonya. To me, there is no comparison in the two performances. Metcalf is superior, just as Robbie can't hold a candle to Ronan.

I saw I, Tonya at TIFF and thought Janney was a lock for Best Supporting Actress.

But Metcalf's work is just incredible. It's much more subtle and I've never seen her play a role like this before.

I was rooting for Janney but after seeing Metcalf's performance, there is no contest.

I have seen both and thought they were both great, but I have to give the edge to Metcalf who just does a lot more in Lady Bird.

Honestly though, after having seen Phantom Thread last night, I don’t understand how Lesley Manville is not wiping the proverbial floor with both of them. Her Cyril Woodcock is an incredible creation and she easily gives the best supporting performance by an actress this year.

Allison Janney is the one to beat. She and Laurie Metcalf have nearly identical narratives (veteran character actress seeks moment in the sun), but Janney's is stronger because she is more connected to the film world. She has appeared in 61 films to Metcalf's 27, and has appeared in several BP nominees over the years (American Beauty, The Hours, The Help). She will be the more recognizable name to voters, and that always helps.

Janney is also campaigning more and has the flashier, physically transformative role. Metcalf dominated with the critics, but I predict Janney to continue her success with the televised awards all the way up to the Oscars.

Allison Janney is very effectuve but there wasn’t a moment in I, Tonya where I didn’t see her “acting.” Laurie Metcalfe on the other hand lived in her performance. Simple honesty. No craft or technique was visible which is why hers is the superior performance. I trust I have now put this debate to rest.

Plus, Janney has been very active on the campaign trail. Tom O'Neill from Gold Derby says he sees her a few times a week at industry gatherings, whereas he has never seen Laurie Metcalf (who has young kids and is rehearsing a play) in person.

Metcalf's performance is the one that has stayed with me. Janney's is impressive in the moment because it's so showy but it doesn't linger.

But interesting that there are a number of similarities - both are overbearing mothers who cut down their children; both have had difficult upbringings and come from poor backgrounds; both never seem to truly resolve their differences with their daughters; both seem to resent their daughters.

There are just more layers to Metcalf's performance. Like the scene where she is talking to Lady Bird's priest shows a whole side to her we haven't really seen, a much more compassionate person. She can be kind and supportive, yet she isn't really either of those things with her daughter.

Janney is extremely well liked in Hollywood and she's fairly social whereas Metcalf is liked but shes not much for partying.

I like that Metcalf is not campaigning heavily. I don't need a Melissa Leo-style campaign (not that Janney is doing that but Janney is much more visible).

Metcalf is also an actor's actor and she is letting the work speak for itself.

It's still not a given that Janney will win. I like that this year's Oscars has a degree of suspense.

It's honestly too damn difficult. They're both astounding in their own ways, but I'll echo what someone else said earlier - Metcalf's performance is far less showy than Janney's, but it stays with you. I'm still thinking about that character over a month after I saw the film. I enjoyed Janney the entire time I was watching I, Tonya, but I sort of forgot about her and the film itself when it was through.

Back in the ‘80s, this category (in that pre-Internet/Oscar blog/Southeast Main Critics Awards era) used to nominate such out-of-nowhere performances. Think Anne Ramsey in Throw Momma from the Train in ‘87 or Diana Scarwid for the little-seen Inside Moves in ‘80.

Janney was great and deserves an Oscar someday for something. She's never been less than stellar, but Metcalf's performance has left me thinking about it in the months since I saw the film. It's far less big and showy, but it felt real to me.

I saw Tonya last nite. All this talk about Janney giving an incredible performance-and I found her prolix and actressy- not plausible for a second. I was surprised because of all the talk about her acting. Sebastian Stan was the best thing in that movie.

I felt like they were trying to give Janney her Mama Rose role to play, but she's literally in maybe 10-15 minutes of the movie total. That's not enough time to make her character anything but a stereotype of a pushy stage mom from hell. At least Rose had 2 1/2 hrs to show that she's not just a one-note shriek fest (unless you saw Imelda Staunton play her).

I was disappointed in the Ladybird, and in the work of both women stars of Ladybird. I love Ronan and Metcalf, but they were one note. The script didn't let either character go anywhere, or back up much of what they complained about. Metcalf is so talented, but she kind of kept going back to the same well over and over in Ladybird, and became tiresome. For Ronan, I don't understand why she continually is cast as these young, hard edged girls when she was so radiant in Brooklyn as a softer leading lady using her own accent. The best performance in Ladybird was really Tracy Letts, who played Ladybird's dad. He was believable was everything the mom said he was - someone who battled depression, maybe somebody who used to drink, but I also really enjoyed his company every time he showed up. Ronan is very instinctual and totally committed, but after seeing her in Brooklyn, in The Crucible on stage, and in this, this is the same as her Crucible performance. I know all her customary choices.

Janny I have seen in a million things and am never ever bored by her. I used to even enjoy watching her as a maid on Guiding Light. Sometimes you need to be a little bigger.

Janney was fine, but Metcalf's performance was sublime. She is not a scenery chewer - it's real and raw and you feel every emotion. I always think of her as another sitcom actress until I see Metcalf on Broadway or in a role like this one.

AMPAS voters are suckers for real THEATRE actors and Laurie's return to the Dollhouse was lauded from coast to coast.

While Lady Bird was boring, tedious and sucked ass, Laurie found a willing partner to showcase her talents.

Janney is very good in I, Tonya. Is it an Oscar-caliber performance? Sure. Why not? She nails every moment and the audience is with her at every turn. Is her performance better than Laurie Metcalf's? No. Laurie's is better than Allison's.

Unfortunately, the Academy has structured all these silly little competitions. Just honor exceptional work. But then the broadcast would be about exceptional work, not about marketing movies.

Janney's role, for as little time she is actually on screen, reminds me of the Best Actor win for Geoffrey Rush in Shine. Noah Taylor, as teenager David Helfgott, acted his heart out for most of the movie, Rush comes in for the last 30 minutes, and wins the award that should have gone to Helfgott.

Allison Janney's performance was a caricature. Very cartoonish. I was unimpressed.

Laurie Metcalf gave a very raw and realistic performance. The performance was not as loud and showy as Janney's, but Metcalf had me thinking about her character for days after.

I hope Laurie Metcalf wins the Oscar.

Metcalf deserves the award 100 times over but probably won't win. Look for Janney or a Marcia Gay-style surprise from Manville, who can then share photo honors with her (ghastly) ex-husband. Spencer and Blige can look on politely but that's OK since Spencer is now clearly going to be nominated every year. It's part of the new unwritten Hollywood contract.

I think they are both tremendous! Metcalf is starring in an Edward Albee play on Broadway with the divine Glenda Jackson. Previews start March 10. That is probably a greater thrill than winning a silly statue. Janney will take it because she mounted an impressive come-back after losing two houses and most of her fortune from the WW due to bad investments and zero job offers. It seems to be her year. I like a scrappy bitch who triumphs after getting knocked on her ass.
